A little about me
Pianist and composer Tõnu Naissoo is one of the living legends of Estonian jazz, whose impressive musical journey has lasted for 55 years. Over the decades, his preferred ensemble format has been the piano trio. With this line-up, he recorded his debut album “Tõnu Naissoo Trio” (1968), which is highly valued among collectors today. In 1980, Naissoo also recorded his next album with the trio, the name “Pöördepunkt” refers to both the changed composition of the ensemble and new searches in music. With one exception (Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman”), these are original compositions created between 1977 and 1980, which range from intimate ballads to post-bop pieces with active rhythms and intertwined ensemble playing. Fresh colors are added by the use of Rhodes’ electric piano to enrich and modernize the sound image, and experiments with the composition (Rhodes and drums duet “Tomorrow” and piano solo piece “Dewdrops”).
The musicians of Tõnu Naissoo’s third trio are the tops of Estonian jazz of their time – Peep Ojavere (1943-1993), one of the most respected jazz drummers for a long time, and double bassist Taivo Sillar (b. 1946). This reissue of an album from decades ago revives a piece of Estonian jazz history and allows us to compare Tõnu Naissoo’s early work with his numerous later records
